I'm surprised that Cashman outranks Beane.  Cashman has been only marginally adept at spending The Boss'es unlimited millions, and while the Yanks' burgeoning payroll has affected the sport, signing checks is not particularly influential.

Beane, OTOH, has remade the way poeple look at the sport and demonstrated that so-called small market teams CAN compete.  Now, your "this quarter!" readers may point, in attempted refutation, to the A's' anemic performance this season, but I submit that Beane has done more with less than any other GM, including this year when a plague of injuries decimated his better players -- the A's have led the league in players used (55!) and games lost to the DL.  If that could be weighted by the influence of the hurt players, the gap would be wider.

But in a larger sense, Beaneball has transformed a hoary, century-old business, infusing it with successful applications of new concepts, and demonstrating to the used-car Commish that money ain't everything.

Thanks, Billy!
